    The Great Western Professional Scholarship

    The Great Western Park & Playground Professional Scholarship Award is designed to  

    assist full and part time parks maintenance/recreation employees at enhancing their professional

     skills. Skill enhancement obtained through educational classes, trainings and conferences is the key to success. While agencies are cutting budgets this scholarship can assist those permanent 

    employees who demonstrate the desire to increase their professional knowledge and the 

    financial need.

     

    CRITERIA:

     

    1.   Applicant must be a current member of NRPS in good standing.

    2.   Applicant must be a part time or full time parks maintenance/recreation employee 

    with a commercial, non-profit or public recreation department/company.

    3.   Applicant must demonstrate the need for assistance.

    4.  The training, conference or certification testing should be related to one of these areas: 

    playground safety & development, landscaping and park design, flora and fauna care, 

    sprinkler systems, sport and water parks design and maintenance, open space recreation 

    design and maintenance.

    5.  Applicant must submit a professional letter of recommendation with their application.

     

    AMOUNT OF AWARD:

    Up to $500.00

    (Amount awarded shall not exceed the demonstrated need)

    The Keith Macdonald Student Scholarship

    The Keith Macdonald Student Achievement Award was initiated in September 1966 in memory of Mr. Macdonald, who was a charter member of the Nevada Recreation and Park Society and an avid supporter of the recreation and park movement. Mr. Macdonald, former City of Las Vegas Superintendent of Recreation, died May 27, 1966. He had suggested that a scholarship fund (intended for his memory) be established through NRPS for the purpose of assisting deserving students pursuing a degree in the recreation and park field. The scholarship amount is $1,500.00.

     

    ELIGIBILITY:

     

    -  Nominees must be a student or professional member, in good standing, of NRPS.

    -  Nominees must be at Junior, Senior or Graduate level student at UNLV or UNR.

    -  Nominees must have a declared major or minor in Recreation and Sports Management, Forestry, Park   Planning, Natural Resource Management, Fitness and Health or other recreation related degree program.

    -  Nominees must be actively involved in the Parks and Recreation field.

    -  Nominees must have been enrolled at an accredited Nevada Institution of Higher Learning between September 2009 and March 2010.

    -  A professional faculty member of an accredited Nevada Institution of Higher Learning must select all nominees.

     

    AMOUNT OF AWARD:  

    The scholarship will be awarded to one individual in the amount of $1,500.00.

     

    SUBMISSIONS:  

    All submissions MUST be received by 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 2nd, 2010
